After a stint at medical school, Peter Carruthers worked for a large bank for a few years before entering the computer industry. In 1984 he formed a software company which grew to include branches in the major centres. In order to grow the company, however, Peter literally signed away everything he owned through bank and supplier sureties. When the company was forced to close in 1992 every document he had ever signed came home to roost and he lost everything that he and his family owned, and more.

Peter spent the next three years selling life assurance to small business owners - mainly so that he could ask them what they were doing to prevent the kind of disaster that had overtaken him. He realised that most of business owners are in the same boat - and that protecting their existing assets from business failure is the last thing on their mind as they strive to make their businesses work. As he was asking so many questions, people started to think he might actually know something and began referring their friends to him for business help! And that's when he started consulting and speaking to business owners about how to protect themselves.

Since 1999 Peter has written Pete's Weekly, a free ezine in which he shares refreshing, innovative yet focused thoughts and ideas with 20,000 small business owners each week. He also consults with small business owners on how to reduce personal risk and presents seminars on 'crashproofing' small businesses, using technology for business efficiency and marketing. Peter was an adviser and judge for the Sanlam Business of the Year competition on SABC3's 3Talk with Noeleen. He is one of the country's leading email marketing experts.
