A late summer climb to over 10,000 feet goes terribly wrong when unseasonally cold weather closes in on the pair as they ascend the sheer face of one of the world’s most testing climbs, the north face of Piz Badile in the Italian Alps.
This is the first-hand account of the climb and subsequent high-altitude Alpine rescue of two South African climbers. At the time the incident was publicised as the first ever rescue where sms technology was used to attract attention to the plight of trapped climbers. While they waited for rescue, the author and her partner implemented various techniques to ensure that they survived with not only their lives intact, but their fingers and toes too! Rachel writes of her adventure in a thrilling style which is sure to keep readers at the edge of their seats turning the pages.
This is what other adventurers have to say about Rachel's book:
Rachel’s courage shines through her fear. It highlights her refusal to give in to weakness, and her determination not to retreat into a solipsistic shell, but to continue working together with her partner, minute after minute, hour after hour, clinging to hope, and nurturing creatively every tiny possibility to live. This is a universal epic of survival. Stephen Venables, mountaineer, writer and speaker
As a high-altitude climber, I found this story of survival both terrifying and inspiring. Sibusiso Vilane, adventurer and twice Everest summiteer
Rachel is a paradigm-shift. On hearing of her exploits, one expects a GI Jane-cast Demi Moore, but gets the girl next door ... with a difference. She places no boundary on her dreams, embraces life on nature’s terms, and simply blends in. I have met few people as inspiring and this gripping tale gives an inkling as to why. Derek Wilsnagh, adventure sport writer, Cape Argus, Independent Newspapers

Just finished reading your book about Piz Badile. I got your book from Geri from Zurich. I am the base manager of the Rega base in Samedan and one of the two pilots who was involved in your rescue. You remember the one of the red/white helicopter that brought you to your car in Valle Bondasca. I remmeber that I spoke to you in the Sciora Hut. It was very interesting reading your view and your feelings about the story. If you happen to be nearby, please step into our base and we will have a nice chat together.
Take care
Marco
